Benevolent Irish Society (B.I.S.) [Hall Map/Info]
Long before the potato famines in Ireland of the 1840s, Prince Edward Island was populated by Irish immigrants - most of them from the south of Ireland. To protect their interests and aid their fellow Irish - many of whom had left poverty back home to arrive in poverty in their new homeland - the catholic Irish immigrants established the Benevolent Irish Society in April 1825. While it is no longer sectarian nor political nor exclusively for males, it remains proudly one of the longest established Irish Societies in North America. In fact it is today a not for profit organization and hall dedicated to promoting Irish and Island cultural activities for all people to learn about and enjoy.
Bites Café [Hall Map/Info]

With dwindling attendance and rising costs, the Church made the agonizing decision to close in 2006. Although no longer a place of worship, people can still be found saying a little prayer prior to their dental appointment, or singing the praises of Ann's chocolate cheesecake. The Café hosts Saturday night ceilidhs in the summer, afternoon music series and stages a play three times a week in July. It also hosted the Summer Islanders Lecture Series and plans to host more musical events and private functions this summer.
